Macomb Twp. Chiropractic Chiropractors Reveal Causes and Treatments for 3 Common Headache Types

A large number of people suffer with headaches every day, but all headaches are not same. No matter what the type of headache they most always affect the headache sufferer’s life in a negative way.  Knowing the kind of headache one has can ensure proper diagnosis and treatment because the differences between headaches can be very distinct, but sometimes this difference is very subtle.

“There are many types and causes of headaches and main way to differentiate between headaches is to know the different symptoms associated with each kind of headache”, says Dr. Chris McNeil Macomb Twp. Chiropractic Clinic Director.

A tension headache is characterized by tightness on both sides of head and sometimes accompanied by the tightness in neck. It can last from 30 minutes to several days. Tension headaches can affect people of all ages

Two main causes of tension headaches can be from a major trauma, like a sports injury or car accident, or from a minor trauma like a repetitive job or poor posture. Major or minor trauma can put significant tension on the nerves, muscles and joints of the neck and create the symptoms of a tension headache.

Symptoms of a tension headache include tightness around the head and neck with a headache that radiates like a hat band.  Common treatments of tension headaches may be medication, heat therapy and chiropractic treatments.

A very large number of people get affected by migraine headaches every year, and 75% of these people are women. Migraine headaches are characterized by severe pain in head and 60% of the sufferers feel pain in one side of the head. Migraines are most prevalent between the age group of 45-64 years and tend to run in families.

“Migraine headaches can also be caused by nerve, muscle and joint tension, but other factors like hormones, diet and genetics can play a part” said Dr. Chris McNeil Chiropractor Macomb MI.

Symptoms of a migraine headache may include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. Treatments for a migraine headache may include strong prescription medication that often has side effects, sleeping, chiropractic treatments or dietary changes.

Cluster headaches are usually located in the eye region. The reason why these kinds of headaches are called Cluster headaches is that they occur three to four times a day in a short duration of time. This is an excruciating type of headache typically experienced by men between the ages of twenty to fifty years.

Cluster headaches can be caused by chemical stress from medication, msg or, artificial sweetener. “Cluster Headaches can also be caused by mechanical spinal cord tension, depression or anxiety,” says Dr. Frank Norton. Symptoms of a cluster headache can include sharp stabbing pain around the eye, nasal congestion and eye redness and irritation. Remedies for cluster headaches may include dietary changes, breathing exercises, medication and chiropractic care.

No matter what type of headache one may suffer from they almost always have a negative effect on one’s life.  From problems sleeping, working or spending time with family, finding out what type of headache and the proper treatment can most often make dramatic positive changes in a person’s life!
